Gunnar Hökmark took in the initiative, in March 1990, to start a nationwide solidarity movement with the Baltic people, the central meeting place being at Norrmalmstorg every week as a platform for politicians and representatives of civil society from all the Baltic countries as well as Western Europe and the US. The aim of the meetings was to continue until freedom from the Soviet Union was achieved. 79 weekly meetings were organized until the Baltic States declared and gained their independence in August 1991.
